Pride and Prejudice (session 5)

Think about what you believe the theme of the novel is. Now relate the TITLE of the novel to the theme.

The novel “Pride and Prejudice” consists of many themes that we all as society can relate to. I think Jane Austen wrote this book to inform her opinions and thoughts about society back then and the difference of roles between men and women. I believe that the most important theme which I think reflects this story is the theme about how reputation affects your life as a human. “Pride and Prejudice” depicts on society where a woman’s reputation is important. I think that reputation is what really defines the novel because the novel consists of so many examples where they use reputation to describe a person. For example, when Elizabeth comes to Netherfield with her muddy skirts and shocks everyone. Also, the ridiculous behavior of Mrs. Bingely gives her a bad reputation. Jane does this because I think she wants to just have a little fun making fun out of people like Mrs. Bingely; but later in the novel, when Lydia elopes with Wickham and she lives with him; here Jane treats reputation as a serious matter. Reputation relates to the title of the novel because your reputation often deals with how “pride” you are with yourself and how “prejudice” you are of others. By taking these two aspects, it creates your reputation in society’s point of view. It all deals with how much of a person you can be

I agree with Maneeta on the fact that the novel "Pride and Prejudice" is based on a time a fairly long time ago, when men had this sort of control over women and their decisions. For this reason I feel that the theme of this novel is about how men could control the lives of women and women are just there to grovel at their husbands feet. A couple examples in the book that I feel show this theme are for one how when Mr. Bingley comes to town, all the women just swarm to him because he has looks and money. He doesn't even have to make any attempt at getting a wife because the girls just throw themselves at him, with the encouragement of their mothers to do so.
Another example is when Wickham just suddenly woos lydia to elope with him. One minute it is thought that him and Elizabeth might have something and then suddenly he's marrying her sister, thats ridiculous and Lydia was totally into this idea and just fell for Wickham like he was all she could get. Wickham only wanted to marry her for the bribe he was demanding from her family, which is another way of controlling women because Lydia is totally unaware and thinks that he is in love with her and all the other stuff that goes with marriage.
Pride is related to this topic because the women are all fighting to find a handsome, rich husband who will be able to provide more for them than what their friends are getting from their husbands, they are proud to show off the status they have gained by being with their husbands, who are only with them because the wife threw herself at him and he decided she was the prettiest, or had the best family. The Prejudice shown in this topic is how the women are desperate to try and 'obtain' a perfect husband because they don't want their family to be looked down on by there neighbours and friends. In the eyes of others they want to be the women with the perfect husband, who has the perfect income, and be the perfect image of a family.

I think that this book, “The Pride and the Prejudice,” contains many themes that are explored throughoutly. One of the themes that are clearly pointed out is ‘love’. Every single main character in this novel falls in love with another character and overcomes obstacles with that person that makes them a better person. For example: the love tension that was between Darcy and Elizabeth. The book clearly shows how Elizabeth’s pride takes over her personality, which leads her to misjudge Darcy. Even Darcy uses his prejudice against Elizabeth. He finds her class to be too low which leads to may controversial issues in the novel.

I disagree with kirstens comment, as during the time this book was writen this was the socially accepted role of women, as many were not capable of doing the type of work the men were doing, because of a lack of technology they had mainly physical labour the women took the roles of supporting the men and were not expected to be able to bring in a large income. because of this their only way to improve their lifestyle was to marry a man who had already aquired that lifestyle. I believe the theme of this novel is about how everyone treats their inferiours poorly and how we should not make first impressions so quickly as we are often wrong. Jane Austens choice to use a variety of characters from the upper class to the lower class creates a very obvious set of judgements between them. This is easiest to see in the main characters but is also shown by people with less important roles such as miss bingley and her opinion of the bennet family and their town when she decides because they have less money than herself that they should not be considered friends and definately not considered as potential wives as well as in Mrs. catherine de bois when she decides Elizabeth isn't good enough for darcy just because he is from the upper class and she is not. Although there are many "prejudices" from people who take "pride" in the fact that they come from good families, as in all cheap chick flick type stories Jane austen tries to appeal to a larger variety of people by showing how all the simple characters can ignore original prolems and "live hapilly ever after"
