Pride and Prejudice

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."

What about a single woman of this time?

I feel women today are alot more independant than women where back in the day. This causes the women to pursue more jobs that would have typically been a man's job. Also women are not being married young anymore, some would rather have a striving carreer than to find them selves a husband and start a family. Where as in the odler days girls where to be wed of before they were even close to 20. Thus, i feel women are not even close to what they used to be, this is due to the fact that women have become equal as men.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Personally, I don’t think that women today should live by that quote. Times have changed drastically, and women today are well educated. Back then girls probably didn’t have a proper education, so they had no choice but to marry into a wealthy family so that they could inherit their wealth. But today, women are able to go to college and university, which allows them to follow a career path later on in their life. Women aren’t reliant on anyone around them (especially their husbands), they are much more independent compared to the women in the Elizabeth era. (Unless they are a housewife with no income). Now a day, if both the wife and husband are bringing an income in the house, the roles, priorities and expectations are equal. Also, just because a man is wealthy, that doesn’t mean that they’re looking for a wife, which just makes the man look conceited and not caring towards other people.

After reading the first 10 chapters in 'Pride and Prejudice' I completely agree with the statement that men in this era are devoted to finding a wife to share their fortune and life with.
To make a refuting opinion to this comment, all that needs to be done is to look at how the women are portrayed in these first 10 chapters. All throughout these chapters the women are fighting to find their dream husband, and the matter of 'love' is not an issue as marriages are more of a symbol of the persons status in the community. All these women are fighting to be asked to dance by Mr. Bingley and when they finally do get an invitation all the other women gossip about it as if a dance is a symbol of a relationship starting.
All the people in this era are only trying to get married for the wealth and beauty of their spouse. The women want to marry Mr. Bingley because he has money at his disposal and if they marry him they will gain a high status in the town as their husband is compared to other suitors by their friends and family.
The people of this era don't have any apparent relationships until after marriage when the two people finally get a chance to know each other without being hounded by an annoying mother trying to marry off her daughter(s) or by other people making their attempts at stealing the person and marrying them themselves before somebody else can.
These marriges are completely confusing when compared to those of today, as at the present time you rarely see a marrige occuring because of the money one person has in their grasp.

Although standards have changed and we now know that marriage is not somthing everybody does, for the time period that this book is set in, the statement appears to be true. This is proven by the women in the town as they all rush to meet him, with the parents hoping that one of their daughters will have a chance to marry him even before knowing about his personality. The women of this era seem to believe the statement even thought a statement like this today would likely cause many problems, as men and women are now considered equals and do not need to rely on each other. I agree with kirstens comment on how the reasons for marriages have changed dramatically and that marrying for money, though it used to be common, is not quite uncommon and even thought of as a bad thing.

In the quote, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife", indicates to me that women's role were very different back then as it is now. Women during the old times were not very educated;very few had the privilege to go on with advance education rather then learn the aspects of how to be a woman. Unfortunately women didn't have much of a choice when it came to life decisions such as marriage for it was their parents who looked after that issue. Parents wanted their daughters to marry into a wealthy family. As I was reading the first few chapters, I noticed that the women in this story did anything to capture the eye of a wealthy man so that they would marry them . The term "love" wasn't really an important part in this life-making decision. Today, women are able to do what they want and achieve what they desire. They have the opportunity to be well-educated and go to college or university and become something. Woman walk shoulder to shoulder with men taking every step of success as men do. Women are much more independent and they have the choice to marry whomever they want to and start a family.
