The main theme of the chocolate war is shown from the meaning of the poster, which declares that one who dares to disturb the universe based on his belief would be paid back with some kinds of mental and physical damage from the universe. Throughout the story, Jerry refuses to sell the chocolates for the school and the Vigils. This was defying something huge since the school and the Vigils were basically the universe in this world. The Vigils are so powerful that they have a control over some teachers in school, and all of the students must follow their rules they made. However, Jerry, who was new to this school, eventually disturbs the universe by refusing the chocolate sale. His actions influence other students to stand up to the Vigils. Unfortunately, Jerry’s influence does not last long due to other students’ disparagement of Jerry’s actions and the Vigils payback on Jerry. Jerry, standing up to the universe, becomes an outcast and finally gets beaten up during a boxing match with Emile Janza. Jerry was brave and had a great intention in dealing with the universe but it was not possible for him to overcome the whole universe by himself. This theme perfectly relates to the title of the novel. The chocolate war is the main event in the story which represents the intention of students selling the chocolates. In this "war", one has to decide whether he would participate or not. Agreeing to sell chocolates means to agree to the universe, but refusing to sell chocolates means to stand up to the universe and create a disturbance. In conclusion, attempting to disturb the universe almost always results in physical or mental consequences.

Eventually Goubert takes apart the Room Nineteen and again fears that he might get caught for his guilt. Moreover, students in Brother Leon's class are afraid to show refusal of chocolate sale in school because he might fail them or mentally bully them in class. Only one student, Jerry Renault, refuse to sell chocolates. However, others stay away from Jerry because of the fear that they might be involved with him, and that they could become the victims from Vigils or Brother Leon's revenge. Therefore the students are expected to follow the orders given by Vigils or Brother Leon, showing the dictatorship in school. Jerry stands up and fights against dictatorship in school- selling chocolates- and title refers it as the "Chocolate War". Since Jerry overcame the fear and follows what he thinks is right, the Vigils threatens him as cruel and harmful as possible. The conflict in the story therefore emphasizes the title "The Chocolate War" and continues to show Jerry's struggle on fighting against absolute power of fear- dictatorship.
