So far in the chocolate war, the “abuse of the power” is clearly shown from Brother Leon and Archie Costello. Brother Leon, a teacher of Trinity school, wants a great sale on the chocolates, so he decides to use his power over the students and force them into selling as many chocolates as they can. When he found a student who refuses to sell chocolates, like Jerry, he threats other students to find out the reason. However, it is very difficult for students to stand up to Leon because they fear that Leon would punish them directly or indirectly. He would keep everything in secret and threat students individually to find out what he wants. On the other hand, Archie Costello, a significant Member of the vigils, also abuses his power over other students. Every student accepts the assignments the vigils give simply because they are afraid. Even though, he is just a student like others, he has a certain power about him that makes students hard to ignore his orders. For example, when the vigils give the Goober an assignment, the Goober feels guilty about it, but still obeys the order. Archie uses this power to reign over other students and achieve his goal. In conclusion, abusing power to achieve one’s own goal is certainly wrong. It is important to realize that achieving one’s goal by his own effort would result in something more valuable.
Commonsensically, students have authority to accept or refuse, but in chocolate war, there is no personal authority in trinity school. Brother Leon ,a teacher of trinity, was arbitrary and degenerate person. He always uses students for what he wants to do. This time assignment was selling chocolates and nobody cannot refuse his order because he threatened kids with F marks on record and Vigils supported him. Everybody was coward. Nobody refused to sell Chocolates due to fear of punishment. They think following the order is only one way to survive. However, Jerry refused brother Leon's order. Students are shocked by his action, but Students felt Jerry's decision of refusal is right as time goes by. Even though Leon is teacher, he did go too far. He ignore student's personalities. Actually, they should have chosen that they would participate in chocolate sale or not like Jerry. If students had fought openly and squarely against Brother Leon, he could not have forced them to do something. In conclusion, author make readers realize that abuse of power causes disbelief between leader and group member and destrution of group. so, for group, leader or person with power should understand their member's ideas and make the decision not from personal idea, but sharing ideas.
In "The Chocolate War" the abuse of power is evidently demonstrated by Archie and Brother Leon. Archie and Brother Leon is the boss of Vigils and Trinity relatively. Archie would use his authority as the leader of Vigils to give "assignment" to students. If students do not follow his order, then Archie would command Vigils to hurt them. Therefore students are forced by Archie to finish the assignments. The other character, Brother Leon, would give a sudden F or mentally torture anyone in class if he/she does not accept his command. For his own benefit, he orders students to sell chocolates. Although selling 50 boxes of chocolates is not acceptable at school, students carry out Brother Leon's commands in order to be safe from the invisible harassment. However, Both Archie and Brother Leon does not care of what students think about their orders. Only Jerry stands up and refuses to sell chocolates. Therefore he is threatened mentally and physically by Vigils and Brother Leon; Jerry's locker would be ruined, and he would be pushed from the behind on stairs. Other students are afraid to support Jerry, and therefore Archie and Brother Leon's abuse of the power continues in the story.
As the story progresses, there are two extreme power holders described in the story: Brother Leon and Archie Costello. First of all, Brother Leon is an evil teacher of the school, who abuses his position to command harsh requests to his students. Also, he is the leader of the chocolate sale and plans all the notorious methods that involves with the sale. In desperation to fill his satisfaction, he asks Archie for support of the Vigils, and helps the Vigils to carry out his plans successfully. Leon shows an exceptionally notorious power when he decides to make Bailey a cheater, the smartest student in Leon’s class. With his abusive power, he makes Bailey to admit cheating: “That’s right…Bailey said, relieved.” (page 45). As it is shown, Leon is a power abuser that only thinks of his happiness. Another power abuser in the story is Archie Costello, the power holder of the Vigils. With his cruelty, Archie orders students to get involved in the Vigils, and abuses students who refuse his orders. Also, he helps Leon carry out the chocolate sale, and commands Jerry to involve in the sale. Archie, like Leon, wants to fulfill his desire by enforcing powers to students to carry out the assignments of the Vigils. For example, Goober, who is physically robust carries out the assignment of the Vigils, after he is commanded by Archie; Archie has overwhelming power that is charismatic to others. In both characters who abuse power, it is clearly shown that they always use their power for their own purposes, but not for others. It reveals the harsh reality that the weak are the prey of the strong, and as a result, the weak people are the one who are always suffered.
