The two boys, John Sulkey and Tubs Casper, in chapter 14 seem to have some contrasts and similarities in viewing on the chocolate sale. Both John and Tubs view the chocolate sale as an opportunity to stabilize their positions and to earn others’ respect. They must sell as many chocolates as they can in order to achieve their goals, so they are both very ardent. However, they have some major contrasts in their chocolate selling experiences and purposes. Since, John Sulkey has been doing these kinds of selling for years, he feels so confident about this sale. He has the lists of people who are most likely to buy chocolates, so he plans to focus on these people for the sale. By selling the most chocolates in school, he wants to be specially honored by Brother Leon and prove other students that he is the master of selling. In contrast to John Sulkey, Tubs Casper does not seem so familiar with this sale business, but he is as enthusiastic as John. He plans to raise enough money from selling chocolates in order to buy his girlfriend a birthday present. Basically, Tubs is in the chocolate selling business only out of his love towards his girlfriend. Overall, John and Tubs seem to have some differences in the main purposes, but their purpose of achieving goals through chocolate sale is certainly similar.
Nobody refused Leon's order of assignment before, but finally, objector appeared at chocolate sale. students are shocked, especially Goober, because objector was ordinary freshman. Actually, these two character, Jerry and Goober, have something in common. The major similarity is instinct of self-protection. They protect themselves even though they have different ways to protect. For example, Jerry refused to participate chocolate sale because he did not want to be related with Vigils, and Goober accepted because he was afraid of Leon's revenge. However,Jerry and Goober have directly opposed appearance and idea. Goober has better build than Jerry, however, he has no confident against Vigil. He does not know how to refuse and how to express his idea to others. He is Just big boy who is nothing different from other kids. so he just participated in chocolate sale without his opinion like other kids. However, Jerry is different. He look like ordinary kid but he is full of confidence. He can talk to anyone his opinion bravely although he does not have build like Goober. So in chocolate sale, he refused Leon's order of chocolate sale for 10days. Maybe Chocolate sale is terrible event for Jerry and Goober. Goober's yearning mind of Jerry shows his conflict between idea that he also wants to refuse to participate in chocolate sale or keep protecting him without self-respect.
As the chocolate sale begins, there are two boys who want to sell chocolates. John Sulky and Tubs Casper want to sell chocolate for similar reasons, and there are also some contrasts between their sales. First of all, both of them want to sell chocolates because it is such a profitable event. By selling chocolates, they can earn money, and use it for their own goods. Also, by selling chocolates, they can achieve their goals. For Sulky, he wants to strengthen his reputation as a strategical salesman; for Casper, he wants to make his girlfriend happy by buying her bracelet. In addition, there are also some contrasts between their sales. John Sulky, who is renowned for experienced salesman, wants to earn more reputation through the chocolate sale. Therefore, he focuses more on planning the sales instead of selling it. Unlike ambitious Sulky, Casper only sells chocolate to buy a bracelet to his girlfriend for her birthday. Therefore, Casper does not care of the sales as much as Sulky does, but only thinks about his girlfriend. Overall, two boys are enthusiastic of the sales; however, Sulky is more like a “planner” who systemically organizes the sale. Casper is a passionate salesman who work for other’s happiness.
As students start selling chocolates, Paul Consalvo and Tubs Casper show that they have same goal to achieve but with different reasons. Paul and Tubs are both passionate for what they do- selling chocolates. Their goal is to sell chocolates boxes as many as possible. However, their reasons differ to each other. Paul views the chocolate sales as an opportunity for himself to gain special relation ship with Brother Leon and other students. By selling enormous number of chocolate boxes in very short time, others would be amazed by his intelligence and ability. However, Tubs sells chocolates in order to earn money for his girlfriend’s present. He would even steal money from his father’s jacket when he is drunk at home. By looking at their reasons, Paul works for his own benefit while Tubs try to make other- his girlfriend- happy.
